How did Rural Rides Tantramar come about?
It started in September of 2015 when Tele-Drive, Rural Rides in Upper Petitcodiac River region, and the Volunteer Centre’s Driver Program were asked by WA Action (formerly WA CIN) to help them find ways to expand door to door driving services to cover all of Westmorland Albert. The three door to door driving groups agreed to join forces because they understood that there are still people who do not have access to reliable and affordable transportation; as each of the groups receive requests to provide driving support services in areas, like Tantramar and Shediac that are outside the current door to door service delivery boundaries.
Who is it for?
We serve primarily seniors, individuals with disabilities, although we are not currently equipped to handle wheelchairs, and low income households. The program is also accessed frequently by rural residents to reach essential services within more dense centres. Anyone residing in the Tantramar region -Dorchester, Sackville and Port Elgin and all surrounding areas can access the service.
How can you help?
Door to door services rely on volunteers. We need volunteer drivers before we can begin offering rides in the area. We are in need of experienced drivers over the age of 21 with a reliable vehicle to volunteer to drive area residents to appointments and to access food needs. Drivers can volunteer as much as or as little as they want. Drivers must also be willing to complete a criminal record check and carry $2 million liability on their vehicle (Rural Rides will reimburse the extra cost of additional insurance). If you want to make a difference in your community and volunteer as a driver, you can do so by calling 962-3073 or begin the process by picking up a volunteer application at the Dorchester Village office in Dorchester, Sackville Commons in Sackville or at PEDVAC in Port Elgin. The driver application can also be downloaded below and emailed to email@example.com or mailed to Rural Rides, 83 Horsman St, Salisbury, NB, E4J 2H3
